Introduction and how to use itOffice Scene project 2For project 2 we were asked to design our dream cubicle in an office scene which was partially alreadfy set up for us. Using the VRTK plugin in Unity, the user should be able to interact with it through Virtual Reality using the VIVE headset in the classroom computer. Each person in the team had to design his own cubicle. Grad students were also asked to design a common main area in the larger space in the office scene in front of the entrance doors. Being a grad student and being on my own for project 2, I decided to design a basketball themed common area and one of the cubicles.
Firstly, here's how to correctly run it: 1)Click on the the GitHub button below to go to the Project's GitHub page and be able to download the entire project clicking the "download ZIP" under the "Clone and Download" green button. 2) Download Unity 2019.2.6f1. You can download the Unity Hub from the Unity webpage that you can access though the button below. After downloading Unity Hub, you can add the correct version on the Install section of Unity and install it in the Hub. If the version is not listed, there will be a link connecting you to unity.com were a list of all the available versions will be listed.
3) Click on the Projects section of the Unity Hub, select Add and browse the unzipped folder of the project. After selecting the folder, click on select folder.
4) Unity will now open. After having connected your VIVE correctly, having your room trackers set up correctly, and having set up the headset on SteamVR, you will be able to play the scene. On the Hierarchy on the left, click on SimulatedCameraRig under "Scaler" and disable it by ticking off the GameObject on the Inspector panel on the right. Now click on UnityXRCameraRig under "Scaler" and enable it by ticking the GameObject on the Inspector panel on the right. This will allow you to use the headset and the controllers to move around the virtual world. 5) Hit the Play button, wear your headset and move around using the teleporter (left controller). You can grab objects with both of the controllers. |
WHAT CAN YOU DO IN THE OFFICE SCENE
Here's an explanation of the main features of my Project 2.
After playing the scene and having your headset on, you will find yourself into the main common area. What you will first hear is the sound of the ball bouncing on the floor. Using the left controller with its teleport you can quickly move around simply by pointing to where you want to teleport to and press the trigger button of the left controller. First, the user can go towards the ball, grab it and try to drop it close to him. This way he can hear the sound of the ball hitting the ground. If he throws the ball far, no sounds will be heard since there's a 3D audio component attached to it. The player can now teleport in front of the crowd sitting on the stands on the side. What he will hear is a sound of women chatting before a game. This sound is 3D as well so it can be heard just in specific positions close enough to the crowd. A megaphone on the bench can be grabbed and as soon as it is grabbed the crowd cheers louder with a new audio clip.
The user can now Teleport to the main office which is along the second corridor on the right, first cubicle on the right. Before getting in the office, along the corridor before the entrance an ambient sound which reminds of sounds coming from different cubicles can be heard. After teleporting in the office, the sound is not hearable anymore. On the left, some objects were placed and with some of them the user can interact. The glass can be grabbed. If it's dropped at a low height, nothing happens. But if the glass is dropped from a pretty high distance (you can either drop it on the shelf or throw it against a wall), the glass shatters. The sound of glass shattering can be heard and the 3D model will now be full of cracks and will look like a cracked glass. The balloons can be grabbed from the wire that holds them in place, and after releasing them they will start to fly and rotate as an animation plays as well. If the user teleports in front of the TV, he will be able to turn it on simply by touching the ON green button on the left. The Simpsons will start playing. The user can walk away from the TV and will notice that the sound will get less and less loud. The TV can be turned off simply by pressing the turn OFF red button. The fan can be turned on by touching its base. It will start animating and a 3D sound can be heard as well. To turn it off, simply touch the part behind the fan blades. The lamp can be turned on by touching its base and can be turned off by touching its lampshade. If the user touches and keeps touching the cordless phone on the desk, he will start hearing a call going to the voicemail which pauses when he untouches the phone. The audio is 3D here too. The paper origami balls can be grabbed and thrown anywhere. The pizza can be grabbed and thrown as a freesbee. On the upper shelf, an inflatable globe can be grabbed and thrown onto the ground. A sound of the globe bouncing can be heard. A frame with my family picture can be seen on the shelf too, and it can be grabbed too. Below the upper shelf two speakers play a song that I like, the audio is 3D so if the player walks far from them he won't be able to hear it anymore. If the user walks out of the cubicle, on the wall on the right of the cubicle's entrance some cubes with Super Mario's textures can be found. By touching the Red mushroom cube, the user is able to turn into a giant character and will be able to see the office from above the ceiling. The ceiling can be grabbed and moved away to see the office scene from a high perspective. Two floating cubes can be seen. The user can either go back to its normal size touching the green mushroom or shrink small by touching the blue cube. If he touches the blue cube, he will shrink down to a roughly 6'' character. Going back into the office, he will find some gameobjects to interact with under the desk on the right. What he will find are: a cup, a paper clip, an animated spider, a pumpkin, an axe, a sword, a laser blade and a LED strip. The player can grab all off them, and use them/ throw them away, besides the LED strip which can be touched and will change the LEDs lights from blue to green. In particular, the laser blade will "turn on" and show its purple blade just when grabbed. It can be recognized by the green handle. Now the user can go back to the wall on the right of the entrance and depending on which cube he touches he can either go back to its original size or turn into a giant again. When small, the user will hear most of the sounds as less loud since they were all turned into 3D audio sources and placed high with a linear roll off which makes them less loud at the small scale. |
